President John Dramani Mahama has engaged members of the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia, United States, underscoring his administration’s commitment to strengthening diaspora relations as a key pillar of national development.
Addressing Ghanaians living abroad, President Mahama described the diaspora as an integral extension of the nation, highlighting their significant contributions beyond remittances, which are estimated at approximately US$7.8 billion annually. He emphasised the importance of their expertise, innovation, and global exposure in shaping Ghana’s growth trajectory.
The President used the engagement to outline ongoing economic and governance initiatives aimed at stabilising the economy and promoting sustainable development. These include strategies to boost export-led growth, strengthen local industries, and implement a 24-hour economy policy designed to enhance productivity and create employment opportunities.
He also pointed to reforms in agriculture, public service, and governance, including the development of a national anti-corruption strategy and the establishment of a Gold Board to streamline trade and increase national revenue.
On healthcare, President Mahama detailed efforts to expand access and improve service delivery. He announced the rollout of a free primary healthcare programme at district hospitals and Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds. Additional measures include the integration of sickle cell treatment into public health services, the deployment of 6,000 health volunteers to support community-based screenings, and the creation of a Ghana Medical Trust Fund to assist in the treatment of non-communicable diseases.
The President also addressed legislative progress concerning diaspora inclusion in governance. He revealed that a bipartisan bill is advancing to allow Ghanaians abroad to participate more fully in the country’s political administration, including eligibility for parliamentary and ministerial roles. He expressed his readiness to grant presidential assent once the bill is passed, ensuring its timely implementation.
Reflecting on Ghana’s cultural identity, President Mahama commended the diaspora for preserving and promoting Ghanaian heritage through music, dance, and traditional performances. He also highlighted the country’s historical ties with institutions such as Lincoln University, which played a role in shaping the Pan-African vision of Kwame Nkrumah.
On the international front, the President highlighted Ghana’s active participation in global and regional bodies, including the African Union and ECOWAS. He disclosed that preparations are underway for Ghana to assume the chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.
Concluding his address, President Mahama called on Ghanaians abroad to deepen their involvement in national development through strategic investments, knowledge transfer, and active participation in initiatives aimed at advancing Ghana’s socio-economic and cultural progress.
