The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured that work on the stalled Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project will resume in 2026. The project, which was suspended in March 2023 due to the government's debt restructuring efforts with the International Monetary Fund, aims to transform the commercial hub in Sekondi-Takoradi into a modern commercial center.
Dr. Forson made the pledge during a tour of the project site, emphasizing the government's commitment to revitalizing the space for thousands of traders and families. The Minister noted that the contractor will return to the site early next year once the ongoing debt restructuring exercise is finalized, clearing the path for construction to restart.
The government has captured the Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project as a priority project, and its resumption is expected to boost economic activity in the Western Region. The project's completion will also improve sanitation and ease congestion in the area, benefiting thousands of traders and families.
The Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project was launched in 2022 and was touted as a major commercial infrastructure investment in the region. However, the project has faced repeated delays, with the contractor claiming that the suspension of works had cost up to €30 million.
The government's pledge to resume the project comes ahead of the 2026 Budget presentation, signaling its priority status in the government's infrastructure plans.
