Remembering Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and His Contribution to Ghana

Ghana’s journey to independence is inseparable from the vision, determination and sacrifice of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose leadership helped shape the country’s history and inspired liberation movements across Africa.

As Ghana’s first Prime Minister and later President, Nkrumah championed the cause of self-government and worked to transform the country from a British colony into an independent nation. Under his leadership, Ghana attained independence on March 6, 1957, becoming the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule.

Beyond Ghana, Nkrumah strongly promoted African unity and believed that the freedom of Ghana could not be separated from the liberation of the wider African continent.

His administration also pursued major development projects in education, infrastructure, industry and healthcare as part of efforts to build a modern and self-reliant Ghana.
