A disturbing incident has been reported at St. John’s Catholic ‘B’ Basic School in Abrem Agona in the Central Region, where a recent BECE candidate allegedly assaulted a female teacher during class hours, raising serious concerns about discipline and safety within Ghana’s educational environment.

The suspect, identified as James Mensah, is alleged to have attacked the school’s Science teacher, Madam Matilda Mensah, inside a classroom while lessons were ongoing. According to reports, the incident caused panic among students and staff, with some teachers and pupils forced to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the confrontation may have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the former student and the teacher, although the exact cause of the attack is still under investigation. The alleged assault reportedly left the teacher traumatized and shaken.

What has further intensified public concern is the claim that the suspect later went to Madam Matilda Mensah’s residence and allegedly issued threats against her, creating fear among residents and members of the school community.

Sources say initial attempts to secure swift police action were met with delays, prompting officials of the Ghana National Association of Teachers to step in. GNAT representatives reportedly assisted in ensuring the suspect was apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigations.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to face court proceedings in the coming days.

The incident has sparked conversations among parents, teachers and education stakeholders about growing indiscipline among some students and the increasing threats faced by teachers in schools. Many are calling for stronger protection for educators, stricter disciplinary measures and renewed moral education within schools and communities.

Several teachers within the district have also expressed worry over their safety, emphasizing that such incidents could discourage educators from fully carrying out their responsibilities if adequate protection is not guaranteed.

Education observers believe the matter should serve as a wake-up call for authorities, parents and community leaders to work together in promoting respect, discipline and peaceful conflict resolution among young people.
